Calculate Your Desired Skin Effect Depth
The loss of a wires current carrying capacity at higher frequencies (Skin Effect) is a result of eddy currents causing the current to crowd into the outer skin of the conductor, leaving the center unusable. Our latest calculator determines the largest individual conductor size that can be used at the entered frequency to yield the same AC current carrying capacity as at DC. While the configuration of the windings and the associated proximity losses can have the biggest effect on loses within a transformer, keeping the conductor diameter less than 2X the skin depth can minimize the skin effect loss.
